How to clean the registry on your computer - Clean my PC Free.

Cleaning the registry is critical to the stability of your computer.

If you are unsure which type of drive you have, Click in the search bar at the bottom left hand of your screen, type "dfrgui" without the quotes and press enter. When the new window has opened, it shows your drive or drives installed on your PC.

If you have more than one drive installed, scroll down the list to find the Windows system drive, it usually has a tiny light blue icon with four dots on it and it is usually the C drive. There you will see the type of drive you have either, a hard disk drive or solid state drive. Click close when done.

The computer registry can be thought of as similar to a Rolladex card system that holds hundreds or even thousands of addresses and data.

The Registry... The windows registry is probably the most critical part of the machine. It is a database, a bit like an address book, the address book has a pack of cards, on the cards are the data entries. Windows uses this information which holds details about hardware and software on your computer to run the system.

It holds information about user preferences. Anything you alter in your system is written to the registry. Editing the registry is not recommended unless you know exactly what you are doing as entering the wrong data can seriously affect the users' PC to a point where it is no longer useable.

The tool used for editing the registry is called Regedit. Older windows versions had a registry editor named regedit.exe. Microsoft did away with that and created a new editor named Regedit32.exe. If you fancy looking at the registry editor, by all means, have a look but DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE alter anything! it could result in serious damage to your PC.

To run regedit you have to open up your command prompt which is the heart of the Windows system. This is where the main DOS commands are issued manually by a person or program once executed. For example, if you wanted to get to a file or directory in the Windows graphical user interface, you simply open a file or folder by clicking on it but, in the Microsoft disk operating system (DOS), command lines are issued to do the same such as "cd" which stands for change directory. Type "cmd" without the quotes into the search box and press enter.

Type "regedit" without the quotes and press enter. The screen will go black... don't worry as this is just the registry editor loading, when it does press yes.

To show a list of subkeys you click the little arrow to the left of the root key. Other keys and subkeys can be seen by clicking the folder icon. The values and aspects held in the subkeys are here. All the root keys perform specific functions. The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT folder defines the class objects.

Class objects are a group of functions that define how you can alter the object it represents. HKEY_USERS holds all the information about the users' preferences on the computer. You may like a plain background on your desktop but some other user prefers a nice picture of their cat or dog

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE contains every piece of information about the machine and the software installed on the computer. Here you can see that on my machine, my default media player is VLC player. So as you can appreciate, the registry is very important but it is also very delicate. Don't forget to close the editor.

Over some time it can become cluttered, even corrupt. If this happens the computer may slow down or may not even work. This is why it is a good idea to maintain it. Cleaning and defragmenting the registry is a very good way to do this.

I learned a valuable lesson one time when I was defragmenting the registry and the power went off rendering my PC useless. I had to do a complete recovery, also, DO NOT turn the power off when it is running. Be sure that no software is updating that may require a re-start. Click Registry Defrag from the left_hand menu.

Before the software executes the defragmentation of the registry, it needs to analyse it and do its' computations regarding space on the drive to move registry the entries around. when the system has been analysed its' then time to proceed to analyise by click the green button top right.

After the registry analysis has executed, the results of the scan will be shown. The total drive space to recover is also shown.

Now it is time to defragment the registry on your system. The software will firstly create a restore point. This is used just in case something goes wrong, you can always go back and restore the drive to a point before anything went wrong so, make sure the check box to restore point automatically is ticked.

When the defragment button is clicked, your system will reboot, just give it some time to work as the process could take a while. Just a reminder, DO NOT CLICK THIS OPTION IF YOU HAVE A SOLID STATE DRIVE! USE THIS OPTION ONLY IF YOU HAVE A HARD DISK DRIVE INSTALLED! again, if you are not sure what type of drive you have, go to the top of the page and read from there.

Once your computer has rebooted, your registry should be clear of clutter, it will be all nice and neat in memory which means a faster and more efficient computer. The next step is to install some Anti-virus so, go back to the top navigation menu and follow the step to install Anti-virus
